This cute felt flower garden is an excellent fine motor activity that is simple to set up and durable to withstand multiple uses. With spring in the air, all of the flower activities are in full force. This awesome Invitation To Create: Flower Garden, by Cutting Tiny Bites, inspired me to create a flower garden of my own!
I wanted my garden to also feature fine motor skills, because young learners are still developing that precision and control in their fingers that we take for granted as adults. Buttoning the flowers onto the felt encourages kids to use the full range of motion in their fingers and prepares them for independent dressing in the future.
How To Assemble The Flower Garden Activity
Materials: (affiliate links below)
- Printable Fine Motor Flower Garden Pattern
- 3 felt sheets
- tacky glue
- 4 medium to large buttons
- sewing pins
- sewing needle
- sewing thread, any color
Print the pattern and cut it in half so that the stems are on one half and the flower tops are on the other. Then, use the sewing pins to pin the stems to a green piece of felt. Pin the flower tops to any color of felt that you want.

Cut out all of the pieces and arrange them on your background felt, so that you can see how you want them placed. Once you are happy with the placement, use the tacky glue to attach the stems only. Save all of your felt scraps for future projects.
After gluing the stems down, sew the buttons on, just above the top of the stems. Here is a great video tutorial on how to hand sew buttons.

Now, fold your flower tops in half and cut a slit through the center, just big enough to fit over the buttons.
Before giving the activity to your kids, make sure that you test the flowers to be sure that they fit over the buttons. Happy Learning!
