I love the downtown Knoxville farmers market, in Market Square. It is always bustling and offers such a great variety of produce, farm fresh meats, baked goods, flowers, herbs and artisan crafts. It is also a great opportunity to support local businesses. Shopping local is so important for our regional economy, and I try to do it as often as possible. With the growing season coming to a close, I was happy to see the market reopening with a holiday theme. I wanted to see how the holiday market compares to the traditional spring/summer market and it did not disappoint.
The Holiday market is still filled with a wide variety of deliciously fresh produce. Although the majority of vegetables are cold weather friendly, such as winter squash, leafy greens, broccoli and carrots, I was still able to find tomatoes and beans at some stands. Even in these colder months, the prices continue to be reasonable.
The bakery stands were stocked with tempting holiday goodies. The hoards of spiced cakes, pumpkin muffins and gingerbread cupcakes were truly enticing. It took all my willpower not to purchase something from every stand. The challah bread also looked super amazing and would be the perfect addition to any Hanukkah festivities.
The flower stands were festively stocked with holiday favorites such as gorgeous wreaths and vibrant poinsettias. And, crowd pleasers like honey, jerky and herbs were also still available. There was certainly no shortage of craft and gift tables, which overflowed with unique and special items perfect for gift giving.
One of my favorite parts of the farmers market is the live music. Sure enough there was a band performing in the park along the market route. Of course, there were also several other musicians scattered throughout the square.
Although it’s too cold for the splash pads, the outdoor ice skating rink is the perfect replacement. I was shocked to see how many people were already out skating in the early afternoon.
If you are trying to shop local this season, definitely consider the Holiday Farmers Market. The wide variety of seasonal and farm fresh goods and will not disappoint. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
