Not only are these counting cards are perfect for teaching beginning math skills, they are a great way to incorporate outdoor time and nature play into your everyday learning. Instead of collecting acorns yourself, have your kids take a nature walk to collect the acorns prior to completing this activity. As a counting warm up, they can count the acorns they pick up as they go along.

These cards are also great for developing set building skills. Often times kids are great at counting a set of objects that has been constructed by an adult, but struggle with building and creating their own sets. A step up from our Match & Count Acorn Cards, this set is more abstract and takes set building to the next level. Now, they must finish a partially complete set by adding additional acorns. Throughout the process, remind them that if they get lost or confused when building the set, they can go back to the beginning to count the number of acorns they already have.

Beginning Addition Concepts
The most advanced skill these cards address is beginning addition concepts. As your kids count the printed acorns, ask something like “How many more acorns until we get to the number 4?”. Then, have them count out the real acorns to complete the set. Separating the two steps with a question teaches them that we aren’t just counting. We are adding more of something to reach a bigger number. Happy Learning!
