Etched Recycled Glass Lanterns
Materials: (affiliate link below)
- smooth glass jars (e.g. old condiment and sauce jars)
- star stickers
- Armour Etch, glass etching medium
- paint brushes
- scrub sponge (optional)
Begin by removing the labels from the jars. A scrub sponge works great for those extra sticky sections. After removing labels, make sure the jars have been cleaned and dried thoroughly. If the jars are not completely dry the etching medium will not work properly. Also, the stickers will not stick properly.
Once the jar is dry, arrange the star stickers on the outside of the jar, anyway you want. I just got a cheap pack of $1 reward stickers, and they worked fabulously. When arranging the stickers, you can choose to do a specific pattern, such as vertical or horizontal stripes. Or, you can be completely random with your star placement. I also tried to DIY a large star with electrical tape. Lets just say the finished product was a hot mess. So, learn from my mistake and don’t do that. The many smaller stars looked much better.
You will be peeling the stickers off after the etching medium dries. These are the spots where clear light will shine through the lantern. When you are placing your stickers, keep in mind that the more stickers you add, the more clear light will shine through. This is homemade decor, so there is no right or wrong.
After you have perfected your sticker placement, use the paint brush to cover the jar with etching medium. The product directions recommend that you wear gloves and apply a very thick coat of medium. I had to leave the etching medium on for about 10 minutes to achieve an even look, although the directions recommend 1 minute tops. The jars are free. So if you wind up ruining 1, before you prefect your timing, it’s no big deal.
After waiting your desired amount of time, rinse the etching medium off the jar. Then, peel off all of the star stickers. If you decide to stop here, it will still be a gorgeous lantern. But, if desired, you can take it to the next level.
For added flair, wrap the mouth of the jar with a festive ribbon. You can either wrap it straight around and glue it in place, or tie it in a bow. This will just be personal preference. Once complete, use the lanterns as table decor for your next BBQ or celebration! You can also change out the ribbon to customize the jar for different events.
